有人说，英国没有他，就没有现在的国际当代艺术地位。他是当代艺术世界的标杆，同时也是当今世界最富有的艺术家。
艺术天才还是商业巨贾？对他的争论从未停止过。

圆点、骷髅、蝴蝶、泡在福尔马林溶液中的动物尸体……这些不断出现在他作品中的相关元素无一不在展示着他的旷世才华。但与历史上所有富有争议的大艺术家不一样的是，他仍在世，今年50岁，正是创作好年华。
他的另类雕塑《献给上帝的爱》价值1亿美元，是世界上最贵的艺术品。对他最富有的在世艺术家称号，没有人会否认。
那是一个用价值约800万-1000万英镑的8500颗钻石装饰的一个骷髅头，经分析确认，所用的头颅属于一名大约35岁的欧洲人，生活在18或19世纪初。这件作品中最名贵的当属一枚摆在前额、重约50克拉的钻石。这件白金钻石骷髅头作品名为《给上帝的爱》，赫斯特曾表示：“我只想借诅咒死亡来赞美生命，有什么方法比采用奢华、欲望和堕落的象征更能遮盖死亡？”2007年8月30日，这颗钻石骷髅头创造出1亿美元成交价，并创下在世艺术家作品售价最高纪录。（见下图）

有人说，它像传染病。赫斯特的艺术关乎生死与沟通。圆点只是传达作品想法的工具，类似病毒或雷德利·斯科特的电影《异形》中黏在队员约翰·赫特脸上的异形幼体。艺术在你脑袋里。生命本身是个绝症，假沟通以扩散蔓延，不论这沟通是性交的、社交的、政治的或制药的。
又有人说，这些我也能画得来！好吧，那些圆点，幼儿园的小朋友都能画的。
只是，他是赫斯特。
